Chapter 7
âHey, hey,â Parker said with a sing-song tone in her voice after breezing into my office the following morning.
âHey, yourself,â I responded. âI thought you were going to stop by the Christmas tree lot last night.â
âI was, but then I had an idea that I wanted to have a chance to work through.â
âAn idea about Rose and her dead husband?â I asked, knowing that Parker generally had a lot of irons in the fire at any one time, which meant she really could be talking about anything, but I needed a place to jump in.
âNo. My idea wasnât about that, although I do have news on that subject. My idea had to do with getting even with Sawyer for pulling me from the embezzlement story, but in the end, it didnât really play out.â
I leaned forward and rested my elbows on my desk. âLet me get this straight. You are actively seeking a way to punish your boss for taking you off a story you had become so involved with that the future of the very newspaper you work for was at risk?â
She nodded. âYes. Thatâs exactly it. The thing is that I want to come up with something that will really throw Sawyer off his game, but so far, everything Iâve come up with is lame.â
I wanted to point out to Parker that she was acting as insane as Tegan had been, but I wasnât even sure that Parker had heard about Teganâs outburst.
âYou said you had news about Gilroy Hubnerâs death?â I asked, changing the subject before I got pulled into Parker and Sawyerâs crazy rivalry.
âI do.â She sat on the chair across from where I was sitting at my desk. âI had some time to spare after I realized my idea to get even with Sawyer was likely to fail miserably, so I did some digging. Based on what we know to this point, Gilroy Hubner was shot around eight-thirty, although, so far, Mr. Goldenrod is the only neighbor who will admit to hearing the gunshot. Personally, I find that odd.â
âI agree,â I said. âMr. Goldenrod lives across the street from the Hubnerâs home. If he heard a gunshot, then other neighbors must have heard it. Jemma and I spoke to the neighbor directly to the left of the Hubnerâs home, and she confirmed that both she and her husband were home but hadnât heard a thing.â
âI heard all that from Jemma once she caught me up. I feel like the neighbors are lying about what they did and didnât hear or see, but at this point, I really canât prove that.â
âWhy would the neighbors lie?â I wondered.
âMaybe one of the neighbors was the shooter,â Parker suggested. âMaybe someone who lives in the area walked in through the back gate, which would explain why Mr. Goldenrod didnât remember seeing any vehicles going to or coming from the Hubnerâs house during the time window when the man was murdered.â
I wrinkled my nose. âThat sounds pretty farfetched to me.
